Joseph MGMinn (June 22.. 17S8-October 17, 1824) was a
member of the state constitutional convention held in
Knoxvllle on January 11, 1796. M.ajor Joseph McMinn was
chosen to deliver a copy of the state constitution to U.S.
Secretary of State Tlmothy Pickering in Philadelphla. He was
lnstructed to remain long enough at the seat or the Federal
Government to ascertain whether the members of Congress
from Tennessee would be allowed to take their seats in the
National Leglslature. When he returned, Territotlal Governor
William Blount was made the first Senator from Tenneuee and
John Sevier would become the Flrst Governor of the Great
State ofTennessee. McMlnn was elected to the first Tennessee
State Senate and later served three times as Speaker of the
Senate. He was governor of Tennessee for three terms
between 1815 and 1821.


John Sevier (September 23, 1745 -September 14, 181S} was an
Americ:ain soldier, frontiersman, and politician, and one of the
founding fathers of State of Tennessee. He played a leading
role In Tennessee's pre-statehood period, both militarily and
polltlcally, and he was elected the state's first Governor in
1796. He served as colonel of theWashington District Regiment in the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. He commanded the frontier militia in dozens of battle against the Cherokee In the 1780s and 1790s

 

Designed

The 3-0 coin was de-signed by Frtd Underdown, President of
the McMinn County HistoricalI society, not only to honor our
225th Tennessee 16th State Annlvers.ary, but also the men
that made It happen.

 

The front features an image of John Sevier it has a 16 Stripes, 16 Star American Flag which was never an official flag but was used as our state flag. The other flag is the first Tennessee State Flag featuing three large diagonal stripes (Red, Blue, and White) with the words "The Volunteer State" and the number 16. 

 

The obverse image is of Joseph McMinn. The picture shows McMinn holding a scroll that represents the Tennessee State Constitution that he took to Congress in Philadelphia in 1796. Behind Joseph McMinn is the image of Tennessee with the date "June 1st 1796" and "June 1st 2021". Then a circle of 16 white stars again honors our Great State of Tennessee.
